The most unique attribute of the genus Melibe and so of Melibe viridis is their method of feeding. They have no radular teeth and but have developed the oral veil into a large veil or "fish net" which they use to constantly scan the substrate as they crawl along. When the sensitive papillae on the inner edge of the oral veil touch a small crab or crustacean the edge of the veil is rapidly contracted, trapping the prey, which is then ingested.
The specimen #4 was posted on 28 May 2004 at these websites as Melibe mirifica (Allan, 1932) [Propemelibe], considered as a valid species by
Gosliner (1987), but was synonymised by Gosliner & Smith ( 2003), with Melibe viridis:
"We therefore consider P. mirifica to be a junior synonym of M. viridis." and "We agree with Rudman and consider M. fimbriata, M. vexillifera and M. mirifica all to represent junior synonyms of M. viridis.
This species was posted on 13 December 2003 at these websites as Melibe viridis Kelaart, 1858, I did not check the authority because it was copied from a 'trusted' website, the Sea-Slug Forum.
I noticed by chance on 24 April 2016 that WoRMS has author and year in brackets, but lists
"Orig. name Melibaea viridis Kelaart, 1858" verified by a taxonomic editor,
only under synonymised names appears Meliboea viridis Kelaart, 1858, by clicking on this one appears
Status Unaccepted and Accepted name Melibe viridis (Kelaart, 1858), and Orig. name Meliboea viridis Kelaart, 1858, also verified by a taxonomic editor.
