Ardeadoris cf. electra is characterized by a white mantle, a yellow marginal band, and a broad opaque white submarginal band. The rhinophores and gills are translucent brownish, There is a white line on the anterior and posterior face of the rhinophores.
It differs from Ardeadoris electra by the gills, let me quote the Sea-Slug Forum:"The rhythmically waving gills are arranged in an arc around the anal papilla and although relatively few in number, spiral in on each side posteriorly. They are subquadrangular in section."
There is no spiral in Ardeadoris cf. electra. The 'spiral' is well visible on this picture from Kagoshima, Japan. A very similar specimen, also without 'spiral' from the Sunshine Coast, Australia, is on Gary Cobb's Nudibranchs - Sunshine Coast identified as Ardeadoris electra. The specimens from Japan Kagoshima and Okinawa have white rhinophores, those from Kagoshima with an orange line on the posterior face.
Pretty similar are:
Ardeadoris sp. 01 which has also a white mantle, it differs by the white rhinophores and gills, and by the diffuse pale red submarginal band, followed by a broad opaque white band, and lacks the ,
Ardeadoris symmetrica (Glossodoris electra) which differs by symmetrical opaque white markings on the mantle
Ardeadoris averni which differs by a broad bright orange-red marginal band and a diffuse opaque white submarginal band, by the orange-red gills and rhinophores, and by orange and white marginal bands on the foot.
Ardeadoris angustolutea which differs by a diffuse opaque white region in the centre of the translucent clear mantle, by a diffuse creamy yellow submarginal band and a white marginal border, and has along the edge of the mantle a thin golden yellow line, which is in some specimens broad, or might be absent in some specimens.
The picture #1 was misidentified and posted on 13 July 2014 at these websites as Ardeadoris averni
Ardeadoris electra is at many websites and publications as Glossodoris electra Rudman, 1990. R.F. Johnson & Gosliner (2012) moved it into the
genus Ardeadoris Rudman, 1984.
